Gut Health - The root of whole body wellbeing

root-cause functional medicine infographic showing how gut imbalance cause inflammation, pain and weight gain

Relentless stress, repeated antibiotic courses or a food-poisoning incidence can trigger gut issues that may then persist for decades, or until the root-cause is resolved. Sometimes the trigger is less clear, such history of fussy eating, or relying too much on convenience type foods.

Digestive health lies at the root of many modern chronic conditions, lowering your absorption of nutrients or triggering trigger widespread inflammation throughout the body.

In turn, this drives fatigue, weight gain, skin issues, UTI’s and female pelvic health issues, joint injuries & pain that prevents you from keeping fit - as well as brain fog, anxiety and poor focus.

This is quite some list. If you’re also battling underlying hormone imbalances - all of this will be amplified, and you won’t be feeling great. If you’re a woman, female health concerns are common.

Gut Bacteria - Hidden driver in inflammation & disease

common signs your digestion is out of balance

Bloating

Bloating is a generic symptom of all gut dysfunction more or less, and is a poor indicator of the root of the issues. Caused by bacterial reaction to poorly digested food, fat-malabsorption, or microbiome imbalance. We take whole-gut approach to resolving bloating.

constipation/sluggish gut

Constipation is the most common symptoms after bloating that we see, and can be stubborn to resolve. Can be caused by ‘genuine food intolerances’ (even coeliac), weak digestive juices, SIBO or dysbiosis, i.e imbalance gut bacteria. Tests help us assess the cause, and we rebalance gut bacteria over time.

wind & belching

You may experience excess wind either directly after eating, or progressively as the day goes on. Food may feel heavy in the stomach. We assess whether your digestive juices are ‘weak’ or there’s bacteria in your stomach or intestine. A thorough analysis of your symptoms and history helps us understand your case.

SIBO & sibo testing

SIBO is a huge driver in inflammation, food intolerances and histamine intolerance, and in most chronic IBS or cases of bloating, we’d recommend testing to rule it out. Treatment includes natural compounds which we have found to work best to ensure no return of symptoms after 6 months.

leaky gut

Leaky gut is a consequence of compromised gut health and gut bacteria balance, and has been associated with allergies, auto immune conditions, inflammation and fatigue. What’s important is to correct the underlying cause of leaky gut as oppose to ‘healing the gut’ directly.

heartburn & acid reflux

Heartburn and reflux is often the tip of an iceberg, from years of subtle underlying digestive issues such as IBS. Occasionally we see cases that are purely stress or food induced, but in most cases we need a whole digestive investigation to resolve. See 5 Causes of Reflux.

Our Ethos

WE DON’T BELIEVE IN MASKING SYMPTOMS

  • Simply masking symptoms with lifelong antacids use while ignoring serious digestive dysfunction.

  • Settling for laxatives without addressing the underlying microbiome imbalance.

  • Accepting chronic inflammation as inevitable, even when it leads to pain and serious disease.

  • Overlooking metabolic breakdown that drive stubborn weight gain, increased appetite, hormonal imbalances, and difficult menopausal transitions.

Given the importance of a working digestion - we’re not satisfied with just being told everything is ‘fine’. Whilst we don’t always have all the answers, we believe that taking the root-cause approach is the only right approach.

Advanced Gut Testing for Root-Cause Insights

The Root Cause gut-health Connection

inflammation & Chronic pain

Our gut is a huge driver in inflammation, dialling up back-ache, shoulder issues, disc problems or sciatica - as well as headaches and fatigue.

We dial down inflammation from the inside, using food, tests and a personalised programmed designed to your individual triggers.

Stress impact on the gut

Stress can be physical, emotional, or simply due to relentlessly operating at your peak performance.

Stress impacts digestion greatly, even in cases where there’s no obvious gut symptoms, contributing to the accumulative effect of burnout, fatigue and over-eating.

brain-fog & cognition

If your dopamine is depleted, you’ll loose your motivation, focus, drive and even your physical coordination can suffer. You’ll be more prone to seeking out sugar, coffee, or develop ‘bad habits’ or addictions. You may feel stuck in a hamster wheel, but there is a way out - and we’re here to help by personalising your approach, based on science.

Hormone imbalance

The biggest disruptor to hormones is stress and the modern diet - but there’s also a strong correlation with gut bacteria and the liver. We map out your hormone imbalances with deeper tests to identify core imbalances not always picked up on your routine bloods, and make some corrections to the diet to promote better balance.

fatigue & burnout

We help busy professionals recover resilience, emotional balance, and motivation after stress or burnout.

We take a root-cause approach even if we know the stressor is lifestyle related. We assess adrenal resilience, sex hormone balance & genetics to see how your body handles stress hormones - and provide you with a personalised recovery support plan over 3 or 6 months. If you’ve developed food or other addictions as a means to getting through the day, 6 months support is recommended.

Thyroid health

If you’re taking levothyroxine or have been told your thyroid biomarkers are raised, you may be experiencing heartburn or other digestive issues. Levothyroxine medication benefits from nutritional support for best effectiveness and to reduce impact on gut. We’ll help improve your thyroid support with targeted nutrition.

YOUR CLINIC JOURNEY

How our root-cause gut health treatments work

 FAQs

  • Our programmes are tailor-made to each client case, so you never pay for more sessions than you need. Most client’s starts with a bundle of sessions, which sets them up with the tools they need to self-manage.

  • It can be, but bloating is very non-specific. You may also experience bloating if you’re constipated, not digesting fats well or have a say dairy intolerance. This is why we usually use specialists tests.

  • Yes we can, although leaky gut is often misrepresented, and it may actually not be super relevant to your gut issues.

  • Functional medicine views gut health as central to overall wellness and the root of many health issues, including autoimmune diseases, mental health disorders, and chronic inflammation. This approach involves a thorough examination of an individual's diet, lifestyle, environmental factors, and genetic predisposition. Practitioners often use comprehensive testing, such as stool analysis and food sensitivity tests, to identify underlying problems like microbial imbalances, leaky gut syndrome, or nutrient deficiencies. Treatment strategies typically include personalized dietary modifications, probiotic and prebiotic supplementation, stress reduction techniques, and sometimes targeted medications or herbal remedies.

  • For many people with severe digestive issues, you may be surprised to learn that you’re unlikely to have a ‘diet-problem’, and it’s much more likely you have a ‘digestive-problem’. What this means is, you can often not simply use food or a change in diet to resolve your gut issues.

  • For majority of people, this comes highly recommended. You’ve probably already tried to heal your gut, but have struggled to identify exactly what’s wrong. Unfortunately with gut issues, symptoms such as bloating, wind and constipation are the same whether you have fat malabsorption, parasites or candida for example. So symptoms alone can’t tell you what’s wrong. A test cuts out guess work, miss anything and wasted time and money. Our guess is you may already have wasted time (for many, it’s wasted years) on feeling crappy, and it’s time for results. When you don’t have your health, you really do have nothing!

Case Study: Resolving Bloating & Constipation

Success Stories & case studies

Case 1: 44year mother presented with severe and debilitating bloating, constipation, and IBS. These symptoms had plagued her life since childhood, made worse in her teens, around the time of a few courses of antibiotics.

Extensive testing revealed bacterial dysbiosis, very low beneficial bacteria, parasites and low gut immune defences, poor B vitamin status and a histamine problem likely related to the gut lining. SIBO and potentially H Pylori was also suspected but not tested.

The intervention: The client was already gluten and mostly dairy free. A course of high dose Antimicrobial ‘treatment’ was necessary to re-balance gut bacteria. She needed constipation support and we adjusted the diet for 3 months, whilst she undertook the program. After this, the client was put on a mix of targeted prebiotic and probiotics very carefully to slowly re-build the gut environment. Bloating was reduced to an occasional small flair within one month, the constipation was more stubborn was completely resolved by month 4-5, and the stabbing pain in the stomach never returned.

Gut Health Case Study: Resolving Chronic Constipation

Case 2: A female professional was experiencing severe chronic constipation, which marginally improved with high water intake but worsened with all types of dietary fiber, complicating her aim for a healthy wholefood diet. Despite being dairy and gluten-free and on thyroid medication for 20 years, her symptoms persisted. A comprehensive stool analysis revealed a deficiency dysbiosis (lack of good gut bacteria), contributing to slow gut transit, and a need for increased bile support, likely influenced by her long-term thyroid medication use.

The client was prescribed a modified semi-IBS diet along with supplements to enhance stomach acid, bile flow, and bowel movements. Within the second session, her constipation had significantly improved, as long as she maintained her supplement regimen. Additionally, she experienced enhanced mental clarity, increased energy, and no longer had a gnawing feeling in her stomach after meals, a symptom she hadn't previously recognized.

The second phase of treatment focused on gradually rebuilding her gut bacteria, starting with a microdose for two months due to her gut's sensitive condition. By the third session, she was able to have bowel movements without herbal laxatives and was visibly pleased with her progress. We set her off with the tools she needed to continue to self-manage and improve her gut transit herself, and reported life-changing improvements in her overall health after a further 3 months.
